In this section on Strategies for Catching Trout I will try and answer some of the questions on why fish do what they do and how we as fly fishers can adapt our thinking and actions to accommodate this behavior. When it comes down to it much of what a trout does is dependent on the environment that surrounds it, stream flow, water temperature, and even weather. These are factors frequently overlooked by fly fisherman but they are vital to knowing when and where to look for trout. We get so focused on the “what” or “how” of fly fishing we loose sight of the “why”. I know I have to constantly preach this to myself when I’m on the water – remembering there is no better teacher than the river itself if I’m willing to take a step back and listen.
